Genomics and Bioinformatics Lab

General information

The lab was organized by the Institute of Translational Medicine together with Molecular Biology and Genetics Department of “Federal Almazov North-West Research Center.” Genomics and Bioinformatics Lab aims to develop new analysis algorithms for biomedical data bulk resulting from up-to-date sequencing, one of the newest highly-efficient molecular genetic methods.

Activities

  • Genome-wide sequencing of microorganisms and short-read sequence alignment.
  • Genetic and bioinformatic analysis of genes related to congenital and acquired outflow tract pathology.
  • Genome analysis of epigenetic pathogenic pathway mechanisms of metabolic disorders connected with cardiovascular diseases.
  • Genetic and bioinformatic analysis of DNA samples of those patients who suffer from and lymphoproliferative disorder.

Metabolism and Trace Elements Lab

General information

The lab was organized by the Institute of Translational Medicine and Institute of Experimental Medicine.

Metabolism and Trace elements Lab provides a variety of interdisciplinary research in biomedicine and solid state physics.

Functional materials design, which includes metallic nanoparticle making and application, is a rapidly developing area of fundamental and applied science. ITMO University researchers study a variety of nanoparticles with different physical-chemical characteristics, biological properties of which are poorly researched. Thus it is necessary to assess copper and silver nanoparticles` toxicity and bioavailability in order to estimate their capacity to regulate copper quantity.

Activities

  • Bioavailability and toxicity of nanoparticle and micro particle trace elements
  • Copper metabolism and homeostasis; role of silver in copper metabolism
  • Gene expression of copper transport proteins

Radiation Medicine Lab

General information

The lab was organized by the Institute of Translational Medicine and “Federal Almazov North-West Research Center.”

Radiation Medicine Lab aims to develop new diagnostic methods, including minimally invasive, noninvasive and intraoperative as well as based on terahertz and IR electromagnetic emission.

Activities

  • Development of THz and IR cerebral ischemia diagnostic and therapy methods
  • Development of THz, minimally invasive and noninvasive diabetes diagnosis
  • Development of early THz noninvasive and intraoperative oncology disease diagnosis
  • Development of THz and IR therapy for angenesis

International Laboratory "Applied Radiophysics"

General information

The lab is based at the Federal Almazov North-West Research Center,” X-ray Diagnostics Department.

The main goal of the lab is to design radio frequency devices with a view to improving MRT and spectrometric systems that have different static magnetic fields (from low field to high field).

Activities

  • Design of passive resonators that increase signal-noise-rate and MRI systems resolving power
  • Design of MRI scanning body-attached elements for new tomographic scanners
  • Composite surfaces and structures for effective RF magnetic field distribution control systems
  • Design of passive devices for MR-spectroscopy signal enhancement

Clinical Decision Support Systems

General information

The lab was organized by the Institute of Translational Medicine and “Federal Almazov North-West Research Center.”

The lab aims to research models and ways of clinical decision support systems in the field of personalized medicine.

Clinical decision support systems lab develops substantial foundation for newest IT systems that will be used for CDSS systems. Lab`s research activities include big data processing methods and dynamic knowledge base development using computerized learning as well as predictive modeling.

The main focus of the lab is to develop cloud-based software for the new-generation clinical decision support systems.
